Today, UPM’s cooperation partner Uniufa obtained CDM registration approval for their Methane Recovery and Utilization Project in Bengbu City Tushan Thermoelectricity Co., Ltd. (UNFCCC Ref. 6988).

The project will contribute to a sustainable development in China by reducing greenhouse gas CH4 through methane recovery. Steam which would be generated by coal-fired boilers will be substituted through biogas boilers (co-fired with coal). Emissions of air pollutants such as CO2, CO, SOx and PM from fossil fuels will be avoided.

The project will install a sophisticated wastewater treatment and methane recovery system. The recovered methane is used to generate steam by eight units of retrofitted biogas co-fired boilers with the total capacity of 1,430t/h.

The project that will reduce 200,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year has been validated by JCI.
